Ojo videophone: can you see me now?

Ojo videophone: can you see me now?
If you are one of the people who bought an Ojo videophone from Telecom New Zealand (announced down here back in November 2006) then start worrying.

It seems Worldgate is in the path to bankruptcy:

Accordingly, on January 30, 2008, the Company shut down its operations as a first step to winding down its business, which will occur if the Company is not able to secure payment of the monies believed to be owed and/or new financing. The Company continues to explore potential financing opportunities and is also pursuing legal recourse against the customer. Thus, bankruptcy may be coming shortly, which would be another black eye for the VoIP industry...

And just minutes ago I read on Engadget that the service has gone dark.

Is anyone here in New Zealand still using the Ojo through Telecom New Zealand?

Yahoo still mulling its options, Yang says
Yahoo has made no decision about Microsoft's takeover bid and is considering a wide range of alternatives, CEO Jerry Yang told staff in an email

Changing MAC address
I was asked this and didn't know the answer, as the boxes I have had always have unique mac address, so it was never a problem... however it was pretty easy to change as detailed below:

Telnet to the DM, and type the following commands:

cd /var/etc
rm init
echo \#!/bin/sh >> init
echo ifconfig eth0 down >> init
echo ifconfig eth0 hw ether xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx >> init
echo ifconfig eth0 up >> init
chmod 755 init
reboot

You need to change the xx:xx:xx to the mac address you want.  Then the box will reboot... and the MAC address is changed.   Easy!

APPLE NEWS ROUND-UP FOR 6 FEBRUARY

Apple Inc

Microsoft's unsolicited $45 billion bid for Yahoo announced last Friday sparked off speculation the company might receive a rival bid from a media company like News Corp or Apple. CNNMoney has reported that News Corp. is not considering a bid for Internet giant Yahoo, said CEO Rupert Murdoch during an earnings call with analysts Monday. As usual nothing from Apple... Although itwire has a very interesting article on the whole matter stating that Microsoft will miss out on one of the best parts of Yahoo! “Yahoo-Japan has a market capitalisation close that of Yahoo! inc, makes similar but growing profits and will remain a publicly traded company on the Tokyo stock exchange, only 33 percent owned by Microsoft if the proposed acquisition goes through.”

Mac Hardware

Are new Macbook Pros on there way?? MacRumours.com seems to think so saying “Last week, we'd heard an unconfirmed report that three new MacBook Pro models had appeared in Best Buy's inventory tracking system. Some inventory screenshots (12) we received today appear to confirm this earlier report, showing off the upcoming $1999 price point MacBook Pro (name cut off in image).”

OS X & Software

Apple continues it round of Leopard builds - just 4 days after build 9C27 was seeded comes 9C30 which is reported to have fixed some issues with Time Machine and AFP X Client

The sydney morning herald has an interesting article on Linus Torvald’s (the father of Linux) thoughts on Apples OS X Leopard he had this to say... "I don't think they're equally flawed - I think Leopard is a much better system," he said. "(But) OS X in some ways is actually worse than Windows to program for. Their file system is complete and utter crap, which is scary." but he would say that as really he was just going on about how wonderful Linux is.

iPods, iTunes & Apple TV

Apple has released a 32GB version of the ipod touch retailing at $499 US ($100 more than the 16GB version & $200 more  than the 8GB version). Aside from the memory bump it looks like no other features have been added.

iPhone

Apple has released a 16GB version of the iPhone retailing at $499 US ($100 more than the 8GB version). Aside from the memory bump it looks like no other features have been added.

The latest market data from analyst firm Canalys puts the iPhone market share of the US Smartphone market at 28% - ahead now of all microsoft mobile devices combined - hows that for a wipping ;-)

Begalet - Universal Personal Transport
This is so cool I want one.

From Scarab Aviation Labs based in Russia comes the Begalet - Universal Personal Transport.

begalet

It can be used on land, water and snow (with modification) and it can fly!

The craft weighs just 55Kg's when empty and can reach a maximum speed of 80kph on land and up to 160kph in the air (according to some reports). It seems to be a motorised paraglider but Scarab also have some fixed wing versions in development.

It uses a parachute in case of emergency landing when airborne and a bouyancy device to stop it sinking when on the water.

The engine delivers just 30hp with a range of up to 400km so it should be quite economical to run as well.

Another music subscription service collapses
Yahoo! Music Unlimited will be shut down in "the first half" of this year. Yahoo! Music site will still remain, but subscribers will be shifted on to RealNetworks' Rhapsody music service.

Now how many of these poorly executed music services have collapsed?
